How To Choose Where To Stay on the North Shore of Oahu

Turtle Bay and Kahuku

The eastern tip is the easiest place to base a first visit. Kuilima Cove is a reef-protected beach that stays calm and snorkelable year-round, even in winter, and resident green sea turtles are a common sight. Two championship courses, the George Fazio and Arnold Palmer, sit just outside the door, with the Kahuku shrimp trucks and the Polynesian Cultural Center a short drive away.

Families settle into Hale Nani, a two-bedroom retreat that sleeps six, while golfers can book Hale Niu, the Coconut House on the Fazio course.

Haleiwa

Haleiwa is the historic surf town at the center of the coast and its most walkable base. The main street is lined with shave ice, food trucks, art galleries, and boutiques, and the harbor launches turtle-snorkel and seasonal whale-watching tours. Central to the coast, it is an easy starting point in either direction, which is why many travelers deciding where to stay on the North Shore of Oahu choose it.

Sunset Beach

This legendary stretch of coast, home to Banzai Pipeline and the Sunset Beach break, draws the world’s best surfers each winter, and nearby Shark’s Cove is one of the island’s top summer snorkel spots. You will not find rental condos on Sunset Beach itself, but the Turtle Bay area sits just up the coast to the east, close enough to reach the breaks in minutes.

That makes Hale Nalu, the Surfer’s Retreat, a natural base for a winter surf trip. If you would rather trade quick beach access for quiet, our Waialua and Mokuleia homes sit farther west, still an easy day trip to the waves. The Waiahole Poi Factory houses over 100 years of tradition built into its walls. Originally constructed in 1905 it ran as a full Poi factory for almost 70 years until 1971. All the dishes available at Waiahole Food Factory are inspired by the food you would find at a traditional Hawaiian Luau.
